The Robotech Legacy collection may be one of the great works of modern media recombination. To create it, producer Carl Macek reassembled hundreds of hours of footage from three different Japanese animated series into a new story that spanned multiple generations. Along with the video, a new soundtrack including dialog (and script), sound effects and a full orchestral music score was also created. In order to synchronize the new english dialog with the original japanese lip movements, a new device was built which allowed the speed of the video to be slowed down or sped up with great manual precision. With this machine, the new voices became perfectly in sync with the video footage and history was made.
